One of the winery’s rare 100% Tempranillos, the medium-bodied 2022 Vina Gena Vinedo Singular is from one of its first single-vineyard sites, planted in 1930 in deep sandy soils near the Ebro River. It is named for the grandmother of co-founder Carmen Perez-Garrigues, who served as the president of Contino in its early days. The river environment helps keep the vines cool in the heat and, as such, it reveals slatey textured layers of juicy red fruit. Aging took place for 14 months in larger French oak barrels. It’s as powerfully graceful as the woman for whom it is named and should continue to develop over.
